How it Happens—Yeast as a Toxin

You may already be aware that you naturally have low levels of Candida albicans yeast in your body as a normal part of your microbial ecology. Candida ferments sugar and exists in the genitals, skin, and digestive tract in low amounts. It is kept in check in the intestines by the beneficial bacteria that also live there along the intestinal walls. A higher ratio of beneficial bacteria than yeast and all is well. If this balance becomes disturbed, however, yeast can quickly grow out of control.

When yeast grows out of control it changes form to an aggressive hyphal (budding) type of yeast. It grows roots, or rhizoids, that burrow microscopic holes into the intestinal walls, letting toxins through into the bloodstream. As the aggressive Candida grows, it releases harmful waste products, known as myotoxins, which weaken the immune system. These myotoxins are also largely responsible for the bizarre signs of yeast overgrowth listed above. They compound brain fog, depression, anxiety, sleeplessness, digestive imbalance, and all the other “unexplainable” symptoms of a yeast imbalance.

What causes a yeast imbalance?
Usually no single factor causes a yeast overgrowth. Often, a collection of these triggers brings the body into a state of imbalance:

  • A decline in the amount of beneficial bacteria in the gut due to aging, antibiotic use (antibiotics unselectively wipe out all bacteria, good and bad), and poor diet
  • A disturbance in your natural intestinal pH that helps keep yeast levels low
  • Excessive consumption of sugars and refined carbs (yeast feeds off sugar)
  • An exposure to toxic metals that can imbalance the digestive and immune systems
  • Immune dysfunction and an excess of internal toxins released as byproducts of poor digestion
  • Certain medications such as antibiotics, corticosteroids, and acid blockers, all of which disturb the gut balance

Once Candida has grown out of control and becomes toxic, a yeast detox program is needed to help bring yeast levels back to healthy levels. Our bodies convert carbs to sugar, making it very important that you stick to a Candida elimination diet for at least three months to completely starve overgrown yeast. After the diet, stick to a low-sugar eating plan full of lean meats, whole veggies and fruits, fiber, and prebiotic foods that feed the beneficial bacteria in the gut.

Candida Diet NO-NO Foods:

  • Table sugar, high fructose corn syrup, molasses, maple syrup, agave, honey, fructose
  • All grains, except for gluten-free grains after the first couple of weeks. These gluten-free grains include anything made with brown rice, buckwheat, millet, and potato starch flours
  • All fruit juices and most fruits except for granny smith apples
  • Mushrooms and cheese (they contain mold or yeast)
  • Beer, wine, sauerkraut, vinegars, soy sauce, pickles, green olives, dry roasted nuts, smoked meats
  • All dairy except for plain yogurt and kefir

The diet, then, consists of plenty of lean meats and non-starchy veggies, sprouted and soaked beans and nuts, and rice, almond, or hemp milk, lo han or stevia as sweeteners, and gluten-free grains after a couple of weeks without any grains. This diet will leave you feeling more energized almost immediately as yeast dies off.

If yeast overgrowth is very severe, you may have to opt for prescription anti-fungal medication.
