Omega Fish Oil Supplements

Fish oil supplements have become one of the fastest selling products in health food stores and supermarkets over the past few years. And with good reason. Omega-3 fatty acids, like the ones found in fish oil supplements, are believed to treat hypertriglyceridemia, as well as offering protection from heart disease. Fish oils and Omega-3 fatty acids have also proven to help those suffering from depression, muscular degeneration, anxiety, dry skin, brittle hair, and poor vision. There are even studies that show patients dealing with asthma and arthritis have benefitted from elevated fish oil consumption.

It’s important to remember that Omega oils are not produced naturally by the body and therefore must be consumed, either through your diet or with supplements. And while many experts agree that it’s best to get these essential oils through fatty fish, the diet of the average American doesn’t come close to the daily recommended allowance. In fact, it’s widely believed that most of us could benefit from more Omega-3 fatty acids typically found in fish oil.

Another concern is the high amount of toxins, such as mercury and PCBs found in fish. Even if you could consume enough fish to get the right amount of Omega-3 fatty acids, you may be putting yourself at risk for other ailments. That’s why so many doctors and health care providers recommend purified fish oil supplements that have the International Fish Oil Standard (IFOS) certification.

Other things to consider when looking for a fish oil supplement:

  • Look for an enteric coated supplement for maximum absorption, which will also reduce any fishy aftertaste
  • A dark soft-gel is recommended because lighter ones are susceptible to oxidation from the light
  • At least 800 mg total Omega-3 per one soft-gel and a minimum of 1000 mg total omegas

Remember, your body may react differently than others who take the same supplement. There’s also no set time in which you should see results. Again, it varies from person to person. But after a few weeks with no results, or if you experience negative side effects, doctors recommend switching brands.

Often switching manufacturers can make a difference due to tiny differences in purity and other factors. It’s also recommended that you take these supplements with food and always store them in the refrigerator to keep them fresh.
